Question:

How can I get my cat to stop using my rug as a bathroom?

For the past 6 months or so, my cat has been peeing and pooping on my throw rug (which, just so you know, was an expensive rug from Crate Barrel which I love). My rug is stained from cat pee, and I just had it cleaned deodorized this past weekend in the hopes that she would stop using it as a litter box. I used to think that she did it out of spite, but I can't figure out why she'd be mad at me or my live-in boyfriend (who she belongs to, but we've been living together for about a year and dating for a year and a half, so she knows me well and is very loving towards me). I don't know how to get her to stop using my rug as a toilet. Any suggestions? And, putting her to sleep is not a suggestion. We love her. But, if she doesn't stop pooping and peeing on my rug I don't know what II'll do!

Answer:

i saw this on a show, where a cat kept messing on a bathroom mat. not sure it'll work for you but the vet guy recommended moving the litter tray to where the cat does it, and leave the throw rug next to it, maybe hanging off the couch or whatever, so he can't mess on it but it's next to the litter tray. slowly move the tray and rug back towards where you keep your litter tray, or outside, whatever, just a bit a day. use praise and treats when he/she uses the tray and not the rug. eventually the cat should start to use the tray and not your rug. I can be an insecurity thing I think, it happened to the cat on the show when the owner went into hospital and it was left with the husband.
I hope it's not wall to wall, because I think you'll need to remove it and I know it sounds crazy but put the litter box where the rug was. It might smell another animal on it and is being territorial. If you can't pull the rug, wash it a best you can and pour vinegar on the areas the cat pees on and put the litter bos there. It must be smelling another animal on the rug, sometimes even if you visit someone elses house and then go home and walked on that carpet you could have left the scent of another animal. Good luck and the reason I said use vinegare is the acid usually will get the smell out. Good luck, and never forget a cat will give you much more joy than a rug.
Your cat could be going on the rug because she has a urinary tract infection or inflammation, (A common syndrome cats get.) You should have your vet check to be sure it isn't medical. If it isn't medical it is likely behavioral. Since it is intermittent and both stool and urine, It sounds like a preference problem. Some cats prefer soft rugs to litter. You can try a bigger litter box so they have plenty of room to turn around and dig, a different type of litter, or if it is a covered box try uncovering it. Also, some cats are very picky about their litter and will not use the box if it is not cleaned frequently enough. Some cats need twice daily cleanings while some are fine with weekly ones. Until the behavior stops I would remove the rug and make sure you use an enzymatic cleaner before putting it back. If none of these things work there are medications (like Prozac) that can help with house-soiling problems in cats. Your veterinarian can talk to you about those also. Also, it does not help, and sometimes makes it worse, if you rub their nose in it.
keep the litter box clean clean it all the time everyday if nessecary next clean that rug like there is no tomorrow scrub and scrub and scrub do not put it back out yet get the cat fixed and petsmart sells something called cataway use it your in a tough situation that is very hard to break just keep that cat pan clean then put the carpet back after a couple days i had this problem with a cat and i loved the cat but my house was kicking he had to go but dont give up and remember keep the pan clean
It's best to remove the rug rather than to tempt the cat. Some rugs contain an ingredient in the rubber and fibers that has ammonia so your cat could be marking over it because it smells the ammonia. Rubbing a cat's nose in their business never works as they only learn to fear the person doing it to them unfortunately. If your kitty isn't spayed she could be marking her territory or if she is spayed she may have a bladder infection.
