Answer:

What matters most if the type of yarnIs it wool, acrylic, or what? I would hand wash it with a gentle soap in the bathtub or on a gentle cycle in the washing machine, BUT only if the yarn used to make it is a washable yarnThis is why I don't knit with wool, mohair, alpaca, etc.
you dont want to put that in the washer because the wool part of the blanket will shrink and the blanket will look really badly distortedyour best bet would be to hand wash it in luke warm water with vinegar to get rid of the smell and be gental while with itso the blanket doesnt felt or shrinkive made blankets out of acrylic and the dryer will not ruin it, though the wool part will will shrink.
I would just put it in the washing machine on either warm or cold water if it was made with acrylic yarnI would hand wash if it was made of an expensive yarnIf it's made of regular yarn such as Caron's or Red Heart, you could put in on a regular cycle, or gentle if you wantAfter the last spin cycle, it will just damp, so put in the dryer on low for only about 5-10 minutesDon't hang to dry, it'll stretch outDon't overdry it; even if it's an inexpensive yarn The yarn will eventually start to look flat, and get a melted lookI've been making afghans for decades, always washed them in the machine, and I still have (and use) the ones I made over 30 years ago.

How accurate do you want it to be? You could use scrapbooking paper with a map or globe theme to get the effect.
