how can i protect my hair from a flat iron?

i'm buying a new hair straightnerim gonna get a ceramic one but i dont know which one is healthiest for my hairi dont know whether to get a chi or ghdis there one that is even more healthier? also, whats the best way to protect my hair from the heat? i use heat protection spray by dovewould using leave in conditioner help too?
