Answer:

He was fired because he wasn't getting the job done. Nuff said. This is not something that is done lightly on the spur of the moment. For this to happen he had to have it coming.
The legendary and brilliant military strategist team of Bill Gates and Barry Obama have new ideas of how the war in Afghanistan is to be fought.
His replacement is the right man for the job he is facing in Afghanistan. Former Greenie Beanie, he is a specialist in counter-insurgency tactics and training foreign troops. In the military, especially in a combat situation, if there is going to be a command change, it's best if it's done as quickly as possible. He wasn't fired; he was asked to resign his command in order to facilitate the change. As any good soldier would, he complied.
I really hated the ending. I don't like how they left us just hanging there to wonder what happened to VIC. I am really sad that Shane and his family committed suicide, I kinda had a feeling that would happen. I think the Shane part was the best part of the show. I kinda like how the bot tried to make Dutch look guilty like Dutch killed the boys Mom.
Gates did not fire McKierman - Obama did. And - unless there is a lot we are not being told - I can see no real reason to replace him. A general with an SF background in fact may not be the best person for a counterinsurgency style war. The battles are being fought by conventional infantry using standard infantry tactics. Even the operational aspects of the war are pretty much standard for a counter insurgency. As a result, I do not think that an SF general will bring anything to the talbe that is not already there. Another thing that makes me wonder is the disconnect between the numbers and the media reports concering Afghanistan. If you look at the numbers the Taliban have been fielding fewer and fewer fighters each year - and losing between 1/3-1/2 of them each year. Another thing to consider is that the level of fighting in Afghanistan is seasonal. The fighting dies down in fall and winter and then picks up again in spring and summer. As a result the news media reports gloom and doom every spring then forgets the country even exists in the last part of the year. And Taliban tactics have also had to change. No longer are they attempting to fight US and allied troops. Instead they are attempting the roadside bomb strategy that failed their counterparts in Iraq. Another tactic they are using is the use of human shields and the attempt to force large numbers of civilian casualties if US/allied troops attempt to fight them. (Notice how the media gives the Taliban a pass when their 'human shields' get killed? The blame always goes to the US bomb - not to the people who placed civilians in the path of that bomb.)
