Question:

How can I reset the service engine soon light in my 04 Oldsmobile Alero?

I am not talking about the oil light. How do I do it with the reset button? If I disconnect the battery I have to reset the clock, radio, etc.

Answer:

Above is partly correct. You will need to fix what caused it to come on. You need an OBDII scan tool to check those codes. If you think or thought it was the fuel cap left loose, it will reset itself after 30 key cycles(Not 30 key on, key off trick either--has to have a drive cycle in between those key on key off trip) but yes, you will need to redo the clock, radio stations if you disconnect the battery. Would be quicker faster if you just went by a local auto parts store have them see what the code is then clear it. Most likely an oxygen sensor code
An OBD II code reader as a rule has a reset perform if you need drawback codes erased. Trouble codes will also be erased through disconnecting the battery or casting off the principal fuse fow a short time then hanging it back- but before you do that be certain there aren't any security instruments needing to be reset with a secret code. The concern indicator mild will come on when there's a obstacle. Diagnose that before you count on there may be just a gentle coming on that does not mean some thing. The sunshine manner anything is flawed.
The service engine soon light is a indicator that the computer has detected a issue. If it is flashing it indicates an misfire condition, and if it is steady, an emissions control systems issue. You will need a OBDI scanner to reset the service engine soon light, and find out what the code means. Auto Zone, and some other auto part stores will do this for free. If it is a steady light, the issue could be a loose gas cap
