Question:

How can you convert a AC motor to run on a DC power supply?

I am trying to figure out how to make an bench grinder that has an AC motor with a DC power supply with out buying an expensive inverter. This is for class project and we are on a budget.

Answer:

You will definetely need AC power and if will only have a DC supply you WILL need an inverter. Inverters can be built. Here is an schematic. However, if you decide to go ahead and try to build it, be carefull as working with power supplies and inverters could be dangerous. www.uoguelph.ca/~antoon/circ/555dcac.html

Can you tell us something more about the motor ? I think if we knew what kind of AC motor it is we could know about the construction and that will make it easier for us to think of a way to run it on DC supply. I think you might need a Brush and Slip ring assembly to be mounted on the same shaft as the motor so that the DC gets Converted in to AC.
