Question:

How could I make an aluminum or glass tube?

I have a few projects that require glass and/or aluminum tubes that are semi thin, but much thicker than paper so they won't bend or shatterI cannot find any tutorials online as every time I attempt to find an aluminum tube tutorial, they are making it out of aluminum foil, which is NOT good, as it will be used for light refraction and it needs to be smooth.

Answer:

A standard piece of paper is 0.004 thickIt sounds like you'll want the aluminum tube to be, say, 0.050 wall thickness to be thin but still have some integrity. There are fancy ways to go about doing this, but your best bet would be to take a tube of aluminum with a thicker wall than you want and then: 1Cut the outside diameter very smooth on a lathe2Machine a hole in a rod of a semi-soft material which can hold a tight tolerance, like graphite3Press-fit the rod into the hole4Rotate the graphite while carefully on a lathe boring out the inside diameter of the tube5Carefully press the finished aluminum piece from the graphite-Glass (Pyrex is popular) can be blown to a thin wall tube.
