Question:

How could you keep your family safe in one of these tornado outbreaks ?

I've just moved to oklahoma city in oklahoma where is mostly known as tornado alley, i didn't want to move but i had to because of my job relocationSince i've heard on television on the news back in 1999 about the deadliest may 3rd 1999 tornado outbreak in history, i never would want to move here if it wasn't for my jobBut does anything like that ever happen here often ? People said that tornadoes here in Oklahoma forms into the deadly F5 tornadoes that is about a mile wide in diameterWhat are some ways i could make sure my wife family is safe during one of these outbreaks if I'm away from home ? Also, how could i keep myself safe if i am on the 34th floor in an building with only express elevators ? The elevators don't have stops between floors Lobby - 29thI'm very curious about my family's safety and mine's in case if one of these tornado outbreaks occurs

Answer:

an attic exhaust fan is always beneficial for keeping the upper part of the home coolerMake sure you have good insulation also otherwise your letting all your cool air escapeThe upstiars will always be about five degrees hotter then the downstairs in the summertime.
Several issues here1How old is your A/C unit and when was the last time you have professionals check the Feon level? Feon leaks over time, especially if you have an older unit and some piping or connections could start rusting and feon could leakThe cooling efficiency drops and you will see the unit seems to work all the time but you don't get the same cooling it used to provideNot only it costs a high electric bills, some part will eventually break down and cost a higher repair billHave someone take a look if that's the case2Make sure there is sufficient insolation (Fiber glass) in the atticThicker is better3Attic fan will help lower the temperature in the attic and help reduce the load for your a/c unitIt won't cause updraft because it is pulling the air from both ends of the attic and not from downstairs4If you have any unoccupied rooms, close the vent in those rooms, and it will direct the cool air to the occupied rooms better.
Your family would need to get underground (or the lowest point in the house)If you have like a cellar or bomb shelter or basement.then these are some of the best places I believeThey need to stay away from dangerous objects though in that area they are atMake sure they have plenty of water and food that cannot go badFor you.check your building policy.but it's the same general principle.go as low as possibleYour building should have stairsThat's practically mandatory and a law.
How about this, simply turn the thermostat down.an attic fan will help draw the hot air out of the attic.
