Question:

How did they get that crane on the top of the Deutsche Bank bldg here by the WTC in NY?

I work a few blocks away and my window faces the building, now shrouded in black netting and scaffolding. I cannot comprehend how that crane got up there!!

Answer:

Deutsche Bank... German Bank... well they heard that someone else wanted to put a crane up there, and so they got up at 5 am and made sure theirs was there first... using the same methods as they do with their towels at a beach or pool on holiday! Hee hee... But most probably with extreme cleverness!
Probably a climbing crane. You build a scaffold with your crane, then climb the scaffold with the crane, anchor, then take the scaffold apart re-assemble it above your current position. Repeat until top of building is reached.
First opf all structure engineer design the crane(wind Load+load carrying capacity+self weight+torsion+moment...etc) then designed in parts then fabricated with iron pipe, angles, girdrers. then transported to site on trucks then assembled in small pieces on ground then step by step joined with the help of crane, or even helicpoter(it was even used in CN tower)
They do it a few diferent ways: (1) They use another crane to put it up there (2) They fly it in - either whole or in pieces - usually with a set of helicopters (3) The pieces are lugged up in an elevator and assembled up on top Seriously, most cranes are bought to the site in pieces and assembled on the fly. They can usually put them up in a span of a few hours. They have the erection of the cranes down to a simple science nowadays. They can also build the crane by using a small crane at the start and building on that until they expand it out to a large one.
Call Vergona Crane Co. in NJ or Cranes, Inc. (718-784-1776) or send your question to No kidding, one of the three will be able to answer your question. They know all about Cranes and Derricks. I wouldn't be surprised if Vergona or Cranes leased the crane to the construction company on that site.
