Question:

How do I cap electrical wires that are not longer in use?

I am trying to completely remove a dishwasher. I don't want to replace it, just remove it and convert the space to shelf space. The electrical is hardwired to the dishwasher. I already have the breaker off and it can stay off indefinitely. How do I cap the wire ends so it will be safe if someone accidentally turns the breaker back on and those go live? Should I just use wire nuts? Thanks

Answer:

Possibly, but very doubtful, the detonating system itself needs more power than a AAA battery could possibly provide. Plus how would the battery detonate it? Like a timer detonator or what? Well you'd probably kill yourself then because it sounds like an immediate detonator. But probably not. The electrical charge is just to small even if it uses all of its energy in one short burst.
You should put the wire in a box with a cover and tie the hot and the neutral together so if the breaker is turned on it will trip off. Codes for this situation differ in different areas though.
You can use wire nuts but I have a better and safer idea. Use a junction box with a cover and one entrance, one sided butt splice connectors, (you will have to crimp them on and make they are tight by giving them a little tug). Crimp on caps are much better when capping electrical wiring off; especially, where there is kids or where there is accidents bound to happen!
Capping Electrical Wires
first do not tie the hot and neutral together, if you do and you breakers suck (federal pacific) or are faulty you will risk starting a fire if its left on by accident. the best thing to do safety wise and for looks is to shut off and disconnect the wire from at the panel and remove it all together. slap some drywall mud on the hole and call it pretty. takes like 20 min at most and its gone. have an electrician disconnect and remove the wire, (they do side work, ask around) be safe
