Question:

How do I get my bathroom sink to stop overflowing & smelling like sewerage?

My bathroom sink fills up very quickly and takes a long time to drain, plus there is a foul, sewerage smell when it overflows. i have also noticed a 3 diameter pipe in my backyard that is uncovered. Should it be covered? Is that why im getting the foul smell inside? And how do i fix my sink so that it doesn't overflow? Any help is kindly appreciated!

Answer:

hi don't waste money with diy remedies get several quotes from plumbers
Your pipes are probably clogged. Try smth like Liquid Plumber to unclog them.
No need to call a plumber, simple fix. Your water trap below the sink is clogged, most likely with hair. Use a wrench for that. The pipe outside needs to be covered, otherwise when the wind blows into it, reverse pressure will siphon nasty gases back into your house.
Your main sewage pipe is blocked. I had the same problem with my shower! Not nice! Unblock the drain which you can find by following the soil pipe which should be on the outside of your house (about 7 inches thick). Pressure wash the drain out or get a special sewage rods which are easy to get hold of in DIY shops.
bathroom sinks usually plug up with hair. take a wire hanger, and form a small hook on the end, and fish out the hair balls/soap scum. once you have removed the debris, you can plunge the drain. be sure to cover the little vent hole in basin near the top on the sink when you use a plunger. I have no idea what the pipe in the back yard, has to do with your sink troubles.
