Question:

How do I remove aluminum siding to insulate my home?

I want to remove the top strips and under the windows and blow insulation into the sidewallsThere are no firestops in the walls, so I shouldn't have to take off more than the top and under the windowsHow do I do this? The siding is 8quot; wide.

Answer:

First- consider the risks of damage, and find out if you have or can get spare materialAluminum siding is easy to bend or damage, and very hard to straighten outYou can't spring it out and have it snap back like vinyl siding The siding is installed starting at the bottomEach piece locks into a rolled groove at the top of the piece below it, and nails at the topThe nails are covered by the next piece Removal therefore starts at the topThere will be some kind of trim that covers the final edge, Remove the trim, then remove the nails and the top piece Doing the under windows may be less desirable, and presents the highest riskConsider leaving them un-insulated, or injecting insulation from the inside through sheetrockIf you choose to do it outside, you may have to remove most of the wall to get to it.
