Question:

How do I remove the front drive axles from a 1990 Geo Prizm?

I took the wheel end off and it‘s now just hanging from where it connects to the transmission(differential?). Is there a bolt or some kind of safety thing I have to remove? I have to take both sides off but I‘ve only tried to do the right side (drive) so far. Any advice would be appreciated. Also, let me know if there is any tool that would make it easier.

Answer:

It appears the guy above me has done them a time or two another thing is that you can buy remanufactured axles cv joints or you can buy BRAND NEW,, hOW LONG do you plan to drive the car or do you plan to sell it sometime soon? I dont know what is available in your area but the new ones generally are more expensive and last longer , while the remanufactured or rebuilt are cheaper but do not last as long.
There is a little retaining clip on end of axle inside trans axle, take a large screw driver or a pry bar and put between inner axle joint and trans axle and pry should pop out. If right side has bearing in middle fastened to block, you'll need to remove C clip and hold in bolt if it has one. If replacing shafts buy whole re-manufactured axle cheaper and easier than separate parts
a ball joint separator tool would help get the ball joint to let go of the spindle otherwise no special tools needed to remove cv shafts
