Question:

How do i turn an ac or dc motor into a generator?

Im tryin to do a little home experiment. I want to know the detailed steps to turn an ac or dc motor into a power producing generator. I dont wanna pay for info so any links to free websites with details on this subject would be appreciated. Nothing complex explaining voltage and stuff like that just the actual pieces i need to add replace or remove for power production. thanx

Answer:

Ac Motor Generator
I agree with J Frost. I would add that the required speed to operate an induction motor as a generator can be calculated fairly accurately from the motor nameplate data. If the motor nameplate is marked 1450 RPM, you know that the motor is a 50 Hz, 4-pole motor. The synchronous speed is 1500 RPM from RPM = 120 x f / p where f is the frequency, 50 Hz, and p is the number of poles, 4. The slip RPM is 1500 - 1450 = 50 RPM. To operate the motor as a generator and produce rated power, you must drive the motor above the synchronous speed by the slip speed. That is drive it at 1500 + 50 RPM or 1550 RPM. If you are connected to the grid and drive the motor above or below 1550 RPM, you will supply more or less power than the motor is designed for. With other types of motors, the situation is similar. To get the voltage, power and frequency in the case of AC motors, the speed needs to be close to the speed that the motor would produce as a motor. Edit 1 I don't think that any of the DC motor field connections need to be changed except to accommodate connecting a separate power supply in case the residual magnetism is not sufficient to get the motor to generate. I believe a universal motor with a laminated core for AC use is not likely to have sufficient residual magnetism.
You need to be able to drive the motor with another motor and use the in cables of the one being driven as out cables.
