Question:

How do I use an ethernet cable formerly putting one computer online to put a different computer online?

Here's the deal, our desktop is connected to the internet by an ethernet cable. I wanted to unplug that etherent cable and plug it into my laptop to connect it to the internet. However, when a plugged the cable into my laptop, I cannot form a connection. My laptop is set to automatically find ISP, and I have done this same process before and had it work fine. How do I get my laptop connected? And please, no suggestions of getting a router, I just need to know the answer to my question. Thanks.

Answer:

I'm assuming you are using the same operating system. Did you have to run an installation disk on your computer to get hooked up. Well the same with the laptop. Some IP providers have a certain page to go to or you type in the IP address given to you and it sets the modem up properly. Is it cable, then call the provider. If DSL modem then reset by powering off.
k if ur laptop doesn't detect ur isp automatically then just set ur settings manually go to ur network connections left click the one ur using and set the ip address and gateway if u dont know it then connect the cable to ur desktop and go to run on the start tab and type in cmd when he command prompt comes up type in ipconfig/all and it should display the ip adress and gateway that ur com gets from ur isp and just type it into the corresponding boxes and it should work
1. Turn laptop off. 2. Connect cable to laptop 3. Turn laptop on 4. Go to Start --Control Panel 5. Choose Network Connections 6. Choose Create a new connection 7. Follow the wizard steps You should be on
