How do speakers work and play sound?

The cone of the speaker has a tiny coil of fine wire in the middle. There is a permanent magnet with a circular groove and the coil sits in this. The cone is suspended on its outside edge by a flexible support so it can move in and out only. A +ve voltage applied to the coil pulls it in and a -ve voltage pushes it out. A large voltage causes a large current in the coil and pulls and pushes it more than a small voltage. This moves more air so you get different volumes out. In very simple terms: An electrical current travels from the audio source to the speaker. The current turns an electromagnet on and off very quickly in response to the audio signal. The electromagnet is near a metal disc on a flexible cone, the cone vibrates when the electromagnet turns on and off. The cone vibrates and causes the air molecules to vibrate as well, these vibrations are detected by your ears.
When a current passes through a wire in a magnetic field it experiences a force, at right-angles to both the magnetic field and the wire. In a speaker you have a coil of wire attached to the back of the speaker cone. The coil sits between the poles of a circular magnet arranged so that the lines of the magnetic field cut across the wire. When AC current is applied through the coil by the amplifier it moves back and forward, causing the cone to move in and out. That in turn pushes and pulls on the air in front of the cone.
