I have recently become aware of the amount of food that I throw out, both cooked and fresh, and am keen to hear from others how they limit how much food is wasted.Do you shop on a monthly, weekly or ad hoc basis? We have recently moved to a little village so popping to the local supermarket is an impossibility and I am probably over buying to compensate.The frustration is exacerbated as we have 9 month old twins and a 3 year old who sometimes eat and sometimes don't, throwing away virtually full plate fulls of food is really getting to me!We don't own a dog to feed leftovers to, and obviously it can't go in the compost binPutting it in the normal bin is attracting the foxes to our garden, and I worry about rats using our bin as a restaurant.Has anyone got any good ideas what to do with the leftovers and wasted food, and how to limit it?Cheers.

Money-wise, buying supplies in bulks is always cheaperThat's why we do our shopping once a monthObviously, the goal is defeated if you throw away wasted food, so here are some things we do to avoid that: -Never overdo it with fresh food, especially diary products, veggies and fruitsThose should be bought as you need themNot only are they wasted if they spoil, but they tend to spoil other things in your fridge as well-Learn how to store each food kind correctlyFrozen, dried and canned items are great to stay long, and alot of things can be frozen (cheese, tomato puree, etc.)Onions, garlic and potatoes should never be kept in bags, but exposed to fresh air in a basket insteadLeafy veggies last much longer in a fridge if they were wrapped in a newspaper (never wash them until you are about to use them)-Keep zipper bags and aluminum foil aroundThese do great to store food leftovers, as well as compacting food items to make more room in your fridge and freezer-Never put hot food directly in the fridgeLet it cool down first.
