Question:

How do you drain the fluid from your brake system?

Just got my car back from the repair shop, and it turns out that someone put tranny fluid in the brake system. I‘m hoping you guys can let me know how I might go about draining the fluid from the brake system so I can put actual brake fluid in.Would I just bleed the fluid out, or would I have to take out the master cylinder, or what? Thanks for the help dudes!

Answer:

Possible brake failure! the seals throughout the brake system will swell up with petroleum oil and start leaking before too long. Document the screw up, so in a month or so you can have them start replacing the master cylinder and each wheel cylinder, etc when they start having problems. The entire system must be flushed -- from the master cyl, thru the lines, to each wheel
Take it back to the shop and have them fix what they have done! That is VERRRRRY bad!!! Brake fluid does not contain petroleum, tranny fluid does. Petroleum will cause all the rubber and seals in the brake system to swell and fail causing irreversible damage. At very least the master cylinder will have to be replaced, most likely the brake calipers as well. If the shop put tranny fluid in then they should be the ones to pay to repair their actions.
If trans fluid has been in the system for any length of time, flushing or bleeding alone will not be enough. All the rubber components in the system will have to be replacedwheel cylinder seals.front and rear, rubber brake hoses.front and rear, the master cylinder or it's seals, the proportioning valve, etc You can try to flush the system but be aware that it may not be enough. In fact, you may be better off by flushing just the master. if the trans fluid has not had time to migrate through the brake system ,it could save some work.
