Question:

How do you know if your gas valve is off?

We have a main gas valve outside and there's a gas valve by out air condition and we want to know which way if off and on .. Does anybody know !!!

Answer:

Generally speaking the valve has a handle that pivots from parallel, to perpendicular. Open is in line, or parallel. Closed is perpendicular. If it's a rotating handle, then the valve stem will be all the way in when closed, or all the way out when open. The valve stem is located in the center of the wheel that you would turn. Hope that works for you.
Most valves like this can be padlocked in the off position. Look at the movable part of the valve: if there's a hole for a padlock that's lined up with a stationary hole so that it can be padlocked, the gas is off.
If it is at a right angle to the gas line, and will travel no farther it is off. In other words, if you can turn it halfway, and it stops, it's off. (that's the way mine is, but don't take my word for it.)
i just went outside checked mine it is in the straight up position. the handle that you turn off or on is straight up with the hole for the padlock facing straight up also. hope this helps happy holidays to you yours.
