Question:

How do you modify an AC motor to run like a generator?

If I wanted quot;run an AC motor backwardquot; ie to generate electricity (instead of electricity turning the axel). What do you need to do to get an AC motor to get it to generate electricity?

Answer:

You need a mechanical means of spinning the motor, the direction of the rotation will decide the order of the phases in the output. If you switch the direction of rotation, you will change the order of phases. This applies to 3 phase motors. Some motors can only be rotated one direction so pay attention or you will ruin your brushes in a hurry. You will need to spin the motor at the exact speed that is listed on the motor's faceplate or you wont see the 60Hz or the output voltage you are expecting. If you are going to try to power electronics with this AC generator you need additional components to normalize the frequency and voltage or you will likely blow things out when your RPMs change under a load / no load condition. You also need to ensure the RPMs are always constant or your output will vary widely. MikeC
it depends on type of ac motor but running it backwards does not make it a generator. you need to run it FASTER than synchronous speed if the rated speed is about 1720 rpm then synch speed will be 1800 rpm ( this is the value for a 4 pole motor and a system frequency of 60 Hz). The slip speed (in this case 80 rpm) is related to the load driven by the motor. you want to drive the motor so you need a negative slip and thus a speed of say 1900 rpm.

A motor that is capacitor assist is a three phase motor, cap simulate s third leg, so with that bein said just swop one of your line wires with your cap wire and use the cap wire for one of your line wires, this can only be done with acap assisted motor that is generally 220 volt single phase.
first you have to have a motor to turn the generator or some sort of propulsion for it if it has magnetite magnets just hook your wires to the poles or connectors you've got power when you turn the motor if you don't you will need a power source to drive the electromagnets like a 12 volt battery and it will recharge the battery you will not get very much power out of it you will also have to clip the power flow resisters inside the motor
