Question:

How do you oxidise Copper?

I am creating a medieval binding with copper clasps and would like to make the copper look more 'antique', what chemicals should I use and what amount? Thanks

Answer:

Try vinegar for verde de gris that green oxidation degrease before applying.
Various chemicals and commercial art products are available. Liver of sulphur is one.
i use liver of sulphur and sometimes copper sulphate (makes it green) liver of sulphur in very small amounts to more distilled water or the copper will simply go black...less is more, you can always wait and do another wash if it isn't dark enough... liver of sulphur in the dry form is difficult to use i use the 4 oz liquid i order form on line, it takes a couple of days to arrive but it is much easier to use...about 4 drops to the ounce of water will do nicely for copper leaf, less if i want to make it lighter or use copper sulphate later.
