Question:

how does a diesel ( petrol ) generator work ?

I know that when a coil is moved between magnets, it produces electricity. how does a generator work without magnets ?one more thing I want to know, what makes the generator turn on when the light go out ?

Answer:

The magnet is anothera coil
Generators all use magnets of one form or another either permanent magnets, or electromagnets.
Doesn't. Rotor (w/ magnets) spins in a stator (coil). When power transfer switch detects a loss of line power, isolates line feed (to prevent linemen from getting zapped), lines up load feed (to house or wherever) and trips starter circuit to gen-set. Or, you go out to shed, shut off your main, plug in your auxiliary cord, and pull-start the SOB.
