Question:

How essential is an EGR Valve to the operation of a car?

Check engine light came on. Had a diagnostic exam run. EGR Valve is gone. Do I REALLY need to replace this valve, or will the car run just fine without it? 1999 Chevy Malibu.

Answer:

Nice try guys The EGR valve has a few things that makes it boath a good thing and a bad thing. First and formost it is for smog controle. The idea is that an engine requires more volume to idle than air and fuel to idle. So if you dump inert exhaust gas back into the intake the engine (pump) will not have to work as hard to suck air and fuel. Because you are replacing fuel and air with inert gas NOx is therefore reduced. In late model cars the EGR valve is actually open at various rpm levels, different engine loads, and throttle angles. EGR error codes are usually generated because of + feedback to the ECM. This could mean that the EGR is stuck (clean it), The diaphragm is leaking, (RR) or the electronics that monitor the position are fried (also a replace) Other things that can cause an EGR code are: no vacuum to the EGR valve, or plugged Exhaust gas plumbing Good Luck Does an EGR help a car warm up/ Yes but that is just a byproduct does it reduce MPG maybe but you would have to have it on a dyno to messure the change. In any event on many cars you can plug it with a plate at the intake and everything would work BUT , if the feedback from the EGR or (like ford) there is no differance in pressure mesured through a fixed orafice. you will still get an error code
An EGR error code doesn't necessarily mean the EGR valve itself is bad. Many times they just need the carbon cleaned out of them as well as the intake manifold passages they connect to. The EGR valve is normally closed at idle, and opens to cool the engine with the exhaust gases and reduce NoX emissions. The computer is calibrated to operate the engine properly only with the EGR opening as it should at highway speeds.
EGR(Exhaust Gas Recirculation) Valve recirculates the exhaust gas back to the intake. The car will run without it but it might miss and it will most likely effect your gas mileage. EGR valves are not 5 dollars, thats a pcv valve. One for your car is around 140 dollars. If you have the money then replace it...eventually carbon deposits will build up.
It will run without it but no emmision inspection station will give you a pass on the car as the engine MUST have an operational valve inorder to meet Fed Emmisions standards. BTW, some of you guys better brush up on WHAT an EGR valve does. It DOES NOT help the car in the warming up period.
EGR or ''Exhaust Gas Recirculation'' system assists the engine during warm up (from cold start to operating temperature). By circulating hot exhaust gases through ''channels and ports'' in the intake manifold, heads, etc. the engine heats up faster and more evenly. Without it warm-up may take a little longer and it may run a little rough until it has warmed up.
