How exactly does a differential lock and unlock? How does it work?

I know when the differentail locks both axles rotate. I just don't get how they lock or unlock. I mean, for a turn it has to be unlocked but for toeing it has to be locked. How does that work? Pics or videos would be realy helpfull too. How does a different lock and unlock?

Originally, they were bell towers. Now it's just a tradition. P.S. Most have lightning rods on them.
