After a few drinks
I have done this four times without sedation. It can be somewhat uncomfortable; but, not unbearable. Or you can listen to the experts who always get sedated because they think it will be extremely painful. The doctor inserts a well lubricated colonoscope in your anus. They inject air (preferably CO2) to provide the doctor a clear view of the inside of your large intestine. The scope with travel from the anus to the cecum and if polyps are found they will be removed (without pain). If you have selected to go without sedation, you will walk out of the hospital and have the rest of the day to yourself an be alert. If you were given conscious sedation you most like were given Versed. You will be awake and hopefully given a pain killer. In some cases, you feel the pain and are unable to communicate it to the doctor (to tell them slow down) and then the Versed kicks in and you lose memory of it and other things that occurred that morning. If you aren't sure tell the doctor you want to try it without sedation. Agree to have them putting the IV in you and if you change your mind they can start the sedation in short order.
Well, there are two ways of doing this... Awake -->Which is barbaric if you ask me! Its plain uncomfortable, and hurts more than you want to know about! Asleep, you dont know a thing until you wake up and you dont feel a thing or any discomfort at all. Now, my Doctor put me asleep and inserted a probe up your anus and it has a light and camera on it so that they can take pictures of your rectum, all the way up to the spinchster leading to the lower intestines. They can insert a different scope or, it may already have a 'cutter' on the one inserted to 'clip' off any polyp and bring it out to be examined to see if its cancerous. If they do this while your awake, then its can be painful, (as cutting ANYTHING from your body is not a natural act!). You should start getting one at age 50 and every 10 years afterwards, or even sooner if you have a family history of cancer, especially rectal cancer in your family. I wish you well.... Jesse
