Question:

How many fires did those Victorians have?

In Victorian houses you see fireplaces in most rooms, even the very poor terraced houses have several of them. So were most of these fireplaces unused, or did most people have fires in lots of different rooms in their houses? Like when they went to bed would the family take some of the burning embers from the living room fireplace to all the bedroom fireplaces, or would most of the bedroom fireplaces just have stayed unused pretty much all of the time?

Answer:

these locks are called access control systems. search that
The voltage is there but the hard wired smoke detectors are usually on a system where several detectors work off the same circuit. If you remove one detector and install a light the rest of the system may not work or it may give false alarms. Most light fixtures are on a 15 amp circuit and 14 wire size as are the smoke detectors. Some detector circuits are on 10 amp breakers and the actual draw of the light is unknown. It can be done but it is not advisable without expert consultation in the residence.
