No its not illegal. however the reason why ur dad is against it may have more to do with the kinda stuff u may have access to with it. its just a peer-to-peer sharing program, in which people share stuff they have with each other. As regards the virus menace, its live. and the moment u download something, u need to scan it both for viruses as well as spyware to be secure.
lime-wire itself inst illegal but 95% of the stuff on pear2pear programs is illegal because you are infringing copy right laws by downloading music, movies, programs that have copy rights to them
LimeWire on it's own is not illegal. However downloading copy righted information is. Preety much every song or film you see on TV is copy righted. Most of what youll find on LimeWire is copyrighted. LimeWire will warn you everytime it doesnt have a license for something(if it says it doesnt you are preety much breaking the law for downloading that piece of media). However your chances of getting caught are fairly tiny, you can get caught though. Its a matter of how confident you are in taking the risk.
I've seen a News report that claims Lime Wire collects personal data. While it is legal to use, the content may not be and most likely what you download will be infected with a virus. Stay Clear!
It's not safe. I work for the a Government agency and we were sent a list of things that are prohibited to download, Lime wire was at the top of the list. Your computer can get viruses, trackers etc. Don't worry about telling your friend if it's illegal or legal, Millions of people use Lime Wire so it's not as if the FBI are going to knock at her door. All songs and movies are copyrighted by their owners/producers therefore if you do download something you are infringing on the owners copyright and - YES - that is illegal.
