Question:

How much carpet can I afford?

I have a budget of about $2300 for the carpet, pad, and labor. I have inquired at two different places and have been given very different estimates of the cost of carpet per square foot that I can afford. These are the dimensions of the three rooms:Living Room: 12X23Dining Room: 12X12Hallway: 4X12How much, with approximate cost of pad and installation fees, do you think I can afford?

Answer:

You are going to need roughly 46 square yards of carpet to do these 3 -- more if the rooms are not precisely square/rectangular or there are any cut outs or niches, etc. Look at the price per square yard for good quality, high durability carpet -- you do not want to have to do this again within the next 5 or 10 years. Don't just get an estimate - pick out the exact carpet you want and get an estimate from 3 companies using the same carpet, or the lower estimate will be cheap carpet, cheap padding, and will look like **** in a year or two. If the carpet costs less than $20-30 sq yd these days, it's probably garbage.
It cost us a little over youre limit to do both of our living rooms in my house. and they were pretty big! I would say you could do the living room and maybe the hallway. But I would check around and see what people in youre area are charging. we found a really cheap company to do ours. so we got it for half what we should have paid... look around it doesnt cost to get quotes
It really depends on the flooring you buy, I've seen floors usually for $1 to $4 per square foot while I was last in the hardware store. I don't know if it's just in my area or what, but either Home Depot or Lowe's (I don't remember) has a $99 whole-house install special that includes padding.
You actually need a 12x41 piece of carpet (total--with one seam in hallway). This is 54.66 square yards. This means you can spend about $42 per square yard and stay within your budget. You can have most anything in the store if you come to my store. The same will apply wherever you shop. Your budget is great for what you want. You have no worries. DECIDE WHAT YOU WANT...EXACTLY. Then have both companies bid on that product. You should be able to get something nice for about $35/sy. If you happen to live in the Dallas, Tx area, I would love to give you a quote.
