It depends on the size, function and model year. You can buy a compact excavator (say for residential use) for around $15-20k. Comparatively newer backhoes like the 2011 Case 580SN lists at around $98k while a 2008 Case 580M II goes for around $39k. So, unless you're going for older models like a 2002 or 2005, the cost of a brand new backhoe from 2011 or 2012 can very easily run in the range of $90k-100k. If you're operating a backhoe, remember that you can either choose to rent it for the duration of your work, or simply go for a model that's 3-4 years old. You really won't notice much difference, plus you'll save an appreciable chunk of cash. I myself operate two backhoes: 2008 Deere 310J and 2005 Allmand Bros TLB220 models.
