Question:

How much does getting a disk brake installed cost to get put on your front rim?

I‘m thinking about getting a fox fork for the front of my bike. but my bike is old but it works great. The new Fox Shox 32 F series are all disk brake. I just need to know about how much it will cost to get a disk brake installed in the front rim?

Answer:

When I swapped out my v-brakes for discs, I went with the Avid BB-7 mechanical brakes. Brake and rotor, and you can find them under $50. Could work with your existing cable and housing, but I'd highly recommend swapping them out too.
You'll have to either get a new disc-compatible wheel, or get your current rim laced to a new hub. As a very rough guess, I'd say $150, although you could end up paying half that or over twice that much. If you go with a BB7 mechanical brake, figure $50-75 for that, plus another $15-20 for a new cable and housing. Plus the cost of your fork. Make sure the fork has the correct size steerer tube for your frame. Also, if your current fork uses the same type of headset as the new fork; otherwise you'll have to buy a headset and new stem too. Again, as a very rough guess, figure $40 for a headset and another $25 for a stem, if needed. All told, you could end up spending $300 plus the cost of the fork.
Installing a disc brakes system is easier then installing a new fork, however it goes further then just cost. Do you have hubs that will hold a disc? It will be a 6 hole hub. If so, does the fork match the geometry of your bike? A general rule of thumb, you can increase the travel by *about* 20 mm's from original before Does your bike have the right headset to hold the fork? If you are good so far, you will need to decide which disc brakes you will be adding. There are mechanical and hydraulic. Mechanical brakes are easier and cheaper. My hard tail has Avid BB7's and they are good (reasonable mechs). My full suspension has Avid Juicy 5's and they are awesome (but expensive hydraulics). Before doing it myself, I got prices of *about* $60-$100 to have them put on the BB7's.
