Question:

My car was is leaking antifreeze. One guy told me without even l putting it up in the air to check it that it was the radiator. The second guy I took it to said it is the water pump. He told me a total of six hundred sixty one dollars to replace it. I went to pep boys and was told eight hundred sixty two. I have a 2000 grand am se.

Answer:

those are hard to work on but not that hard to work on,id shop around i do those for around 350 bucks all the time, they are hard to put on,but there has to be a limit on how much the job is worth, that's almost what the car is worth, you can get it doe a lot cheaper than that, just by shopping around on prices, good luck with it.

Do it yourself I did it 4 times to different cars easy job depending on where you buy 40 to 90 dollars just take of belt drain radiator take off necessary accessories take of pump put a sealant on and there ya go
I checked online and saw Ford Escort water pump for less than $50. But you can always call local auto parts store like Autozone or Pep Boys to get their cost. Allow up to $100 for water pump. Costs for labor are obviously expensive, too. That's what the costs of $300 that some are saying. Consider $100 for pump and $200 for labor. If they actually think that the water pump would cost $300, they forgot that we're talking about an ESCORT!! Not a Lexus or BMW.
It depends what engine you have. If it is a V6 3.4... the labor is only .5 and the water pump is about $65.00, and one gallon of Dexcool is $21.33. Sounds like $661.00 is far off. If you have a 2.4 engine, the water pump is quite complicated to replace, as it is in the rear bottom of the engine and driven by the timing chain. I replaced one when I worked in a shop. Notice I said ONE? Those are a More than likely you have a 2.4 with a price like that. That is also not a bad price, being that the pump runs about $50.00, but the labor is about 9.5 hours to install it. Make sure the diagnosis was properly done. The water pump on the 2.4 is a far cry from the radiator. The water pump bolts into the back of the timing cover, and the back flange on the pump bolts to another flang on the water pipe back there. There is also a bypass pipe that has an o-ring on it that pops into the pump. If it is just that o-ring leaking, you will save a ton of money.
