Question:

How often should I clean the K&N cold air intake?

Hello, on my Camaro i have one of those big KN cold air intakes (the fipk).how often should I take the cone(scoop) part off and clean it. What advantages could I gain by doing this?

Answer:

It really depends on how fast the filter gets dirty. If you have a ram-air intake, that won't take very long, especially if you live in an area that has a lot of pollutants. With the engine running, remove the filter and listen for a change in rpm. If the rpm picks up with the filter removed, it has to be replaced.
Depends on where you live, if you're driving mostly on paved roads you're probably ok letting it go 15,000-20,000 miles, if you drive on gravel a lot you're looking at 5,000-10,000. The advantages of this is that if you don't do it the filter will get clogged and you will get less airflow, less airflow less power. Keep in mind that cleaning the filter is nearly an all day event, cleaning it with water and the detergent, letting it air dry (You can't use compressed air to dry it, you'll damage the filter), and then applying oil and letting it soak in, drip off and dry.
well i have a KN air intake kit on my truck, i was told by someone from KN to clean it every 50,000 miles or 25,000 miles if your on dusty or gravel roads all the time, but you have to use their KN filter cleaner and filter oil, i have a 12 oz aerosole can of the oil and a 32 oz spray bottle of the cleaner, both together actually cost the same as a fram stock filter for my truck, not the reusable one either, the kind you have to replace, they were about $10 each and they'll last a few cleanings i think, at least 2 or 3 im sure, so its worth it, just make sure to not over oil the filter because the oil can get on your mass air flow sensor but it will be fine as long as you don't over oil it
