Question:

how to calculate stress from weight and area for engineering?

I have a problem to calculate:If a silo weighs 3.2 tonnes and is carried on four steel columns each of 2,600mm^2 cross sectional area, what is the stress in the columns? (MPa)Thanks!

Answer:

sigma = force / area One column carries 1/4th of the total load. Therefore, sigma = (3.2 * 1000 kg ) / (4 * 2600 mm^2)
