Question:

How to calm self before preforming!?

Heey, I've always been really shy as a person. So I decided to join Drama in school, and Musical theater as an after school activity to help me get out of my shy-girl attitude. I was wondering if you could give me some tips on how to calm myself down, and go more with the flow for when I'm preforming. Because I know that I will be in an upcoming play called quot; The West Side Storyquot; really soon, we're already starting to prepare for it.So, could you please help me as best as you can with some things you do to calm yourself before preforming. Good ways to help me relax and feel more at ease in a situation such as preforming in a play.Thankyou! -Hisoka Akuma

Answer:

Close your eyes, breathe deeply, and think about something that makes you happy.
First, don't worry about being shy, lots of actors are, I still am and I've been in a bunch of shows. Before and audition it helps if you just do some slow, full breaths. Before a show I find it helps if you take on your character before going on stage. Maybe talk to your friends the way your character would, or talk into the mirror. Really get into who that person is and how he/she feels. At auditions you are more vulnerable but for singing that also helps. Become the character before you step into the spotlight. Break a leg!
Do physical warm-ups. My favorite is shakes. Start by shaking out one of your arms and say, Arm 2,3,4,5,6,7,8 then do the same thing to the other arm. Then replace the word arm with leg. Shake out your legs. You can also do head, hips, shoulders, and body. After you do it to your whole body counting to eight, then count to 4. then count to 2. then to 1. Its a fast warm up which helps you get loose and makes it easier to move. If you are scared of messing your part, just remember, the audience does not know your lines or blocking!!! If you forget something, improvise! I hope this helps you! You will do amazing. Break-a-Leg!!!
