Question:

How to correctly identify AC fan motor wires?

After taking out and cleaning and coaxing the AC fan motor in my attic over the past year, I have finally removed it for good and ordered a new one along with a new capacitor, all from Grainger for around $220. This motor sits in a squirrel cage surrounded by a fan. The heat pump is located on the outside of the house. The old motor's connecting wires are red and yellow and black. How can I identify the right connections should the wires on the new one I'm picking up tomorrow have different colors? I am depending on the Grainger guys to correctly identify the correct connection to the capacitor. I do all this myself because I'm on a disability budget and have managed most similar repairs for over a decade. It's not always easy but the willingness to learn has always benefited. Thanks for guidance.

Answer:

You are more then welcome. Helps keep my idle mind working. Every fan motor I have seen has the color code in the label. Common, should be 2 browns for the capacitor and 3 or 4 colors for the speeds. Check your old motor and write down what color is what speed. Now check the new motor and match the speed to the color. In most cases I have found them to be that same. Almost a industry standard. It may even tell you how to reverse it should it be running in the wrong direction. If the old motor did not have this or you can't make it out, then you need to check the wiring diagram for your unit. Should you need more help, please tell us you model number and the motors Grainger number. I have kept my acct. with them open. I notice that you are picking the motor up tomorrow. Take the old motor with you to compare. Check the new motor's name plate for that wiring diagram.
Schematics should have been on the inside cover of the AC or you should have labeled what went to where when you took them off. While the new motor may be a direct replacement, they can often be universal fits and as you know, the colors and such may be different. There is usually a diagram that comes with them so you know what is what. Along with replacing the motor, it is a good idea to replace the capacitor to.
