Answer:

gunk makes an engine de-greaser that works really well ,and yo do have the right idea on how to do it,try to keep all the electrical parts dry if possible, most of them are sealed off,but you still don't want to soak them to much,i clean every engine before i work on them in the shop,it makes them a lot easier to work on,all you need to do is take your time with it,and don't get the distributor cap wet on it,if you do it probably wont start and run to well, other than that ,all you got to do is take your time with it,and you,ll get it back to looking good,be careful when using high pressure it can blow vacuum hoses loose on it also, good luck with it.
The previous answer is good and it does workA second best way that I use occasionally is to spray with Simple Green and then after it had soaked in spray it off with a garden hoseNot as good but worksthe Amorall technique is definitely good.
Hillbill is absolutely correctI have done this many, many times and have never had a problemThe Armor-all tip he mentioned is also correct, I do that too and you would not believe how it will make your engine compartment look.
go to a car wash and leave the engine running and use the high pressure soaphold the nozzel a good foot or two away and listen to the engine if it starts to sputter then stop because water is getting into the distributor/ spark plug wires and can take a while to dry out and get restartedi have done it many times and never had a problemonce its washed take some armor all and just spray it on the plastic parts of the engine such as the air filter housing and suchdon't worry bout wiping it off it will soak in or run off but it will give it that new car shine under the hood.
