Question:

How to fix a good sized hole in a carpet?

There's a nice hole in the carpet that's pretty deep. How do you fix it?

Answer:

If you have a scrap of the carpet, you could try cutting a piece to fit in the hole and either tape it,glue it, or sew it in. Otherwise, buy a nice rug to go in the room that will cover the hole.
make the hole in the carpet an even circle and replace it with a piece of carpet from somewhere else in the room under something your not planning to move like a bed dresser t.v etc. You can cut the carpet with a razor blade and glue the piece in to the problem hole with gorilla glue
If you have a piece of the carpet available for a patch, you can do that quite easily. First, be sure none of the padding is missing - if it is, you'll need to fill that in first and then do the following: Cut a piece of sturdy cardboard into a circle (a square has corners, and corners are a no-no for patches - they tend to lift). Use that template carefully mark your carpet (you can trim back/shave the carpet itself within the space that will be cut to make it easier to manage) then trim the hole in the carpet to that shape. Don't freak out - it's MUCH easier to patch when they are both the same size it's easier this way rather than trying to trace the shape of the current hole - trust me! Once that is done, use the template again and (using a sharpie) draw a circle on the back of the spare piece of carpet for the patch. Cut the patch approximately 1/2 BIGGER than the template all the way around trying to keep it as uniform as you can. Take your scissors and trim away the carpet fibers from the outside edge of the patch up to the borderline of the template mark (the line you drew on the back of the patch piece). Slip the patch underneath the hole in the carpet so the 1/2 of bare backing is underneath the carpet, and the carpet fibers are coming up through the hole, filling it in. Use a hot glue gun and very carefully lift up the edge of the carpet apply glue between the carpet itself the lip of the patch. Press down as you go (using foil to protect your hands) all the way around the hole. I sure hope I explained this to where it's understandable! I've done it before (thanks to our dog who chewed three holes in our carpet when he was a pup) and it works beautifully no one knows where the patches are!
We repair carpet all the time and it is part art and a lot of Patience. You need scrap carpet. A Straight Edge. A carpet Knife (Home Depot) Roberts carpet glue and seam tape. If the carpet is thick you have a better chance to not have the seams show. It is important the nap is running the same direction or you can see the patch. We use a pencil and paper. Place the paper on top of the carpet and pencil on top of the paper. Run your hand back and forth over the pencil and the paper will move. This is the direction the nap is running.. On you scrap you want to do the same thing and mark on the back the direction the nap is running. CUT Carefully and exactly. IMPORTANT. After you make your cuts dry fit and adjust till it looks great. Next Use the roberts glue to seal the edges on both the carpet and the scrap edges and let it dry. Otherwise it will fray. Place seam tape on the edges of the carpeting and place the scrap on it. Use a shoe brush to adjust and clean the nap. Trim any loose fibers. NOTE if you use new scrap carpet you will notice the patch.
cover it with a little carpet or put some furniture over it
