Question:

how to improve trucks air intake?

i wanna to modify my stock f150 air intake to improve the flow and horsepower just alittle.i have a 2006 f150 with the 4.6l. ( high flow exhaust with exhaust tip). i am going to buy a KN cold air intake at the end of summer. but need a cheap fix for now. thanks for looking

Answer:

waste of time waste of money , the federal regulations are so tight that if a device gave more power or better mileage EVERY company would fit them, cold air intakes USED to work on 70s and 80s carbureted cars and trucks but don't work at all on injection engines or most diesels, if you don't believe me get a dyno reading , fit a cold air device and get another dyno reading and you will have wasted $300 the cold air makers know you won't do that
The intake you have on the truck (you mention it is stock) is the best. Ford spent a lot of money designing it for best fuel economy and most power from the engine so a larger engine was not needed, both in the interest of meeting CAFE standards. KN doesn't care half as much. Cold air intakes are relics of the 1960s and 1970s, when carburetors typically took in air from the top of the engine. In those days cold air intakes, which brought air in from outside the engine compartment, made a real difference. Today they are no improvement at all in everyday driving, and even the slightly reduced intake restriction of the stock intake only makes a bit of difference at full throttle and the engine near peak horsepower. You will never be able to tell the difference. In return, slower warm-up due to not taking in heated air during warm-up means more fuel consumption and longer waits for the engine to be ready to put out power.
