Question:

how to intall a new shut off valve?

I'm installing a shut off valve under my sink. can you tell me all the materials that i need to install it by myself because to hire some body else is very expensive where i live. i need to change the old ones because they are leaking very bad when i want to use the sink.thanks a lot

Answer:

if you have copper pipes i assume you need pipe cutters or a hacksaw a pair of channel locks and a crescent wrench some pipe dope for threads of compression fittings.
It might just be the rubber gasket inside the valve You'll need: Screw driver to take off screw for handle, Adjustable wrench(Crescent, spanner etc.) a faucet repair kit which has various sizes of seats Turn Off Water!!!!!!!! Open lowest sink or faucet outside or inside let drain off pressure. have a pan or something to catch the drips. with the screw driver unscrew handle and take off for minute, unscrew top (sometimes you can stop a drip by tightening this top to push on the packing depending on where it is leaking) of valve with adjustable wrench and take off there will be a packing material around shaft of valve (black, graphite grey) refasten valve handle and open valve all the way (counter clockwise) It should come out after unthreading. On the bottom of valve stem should be a screw holding the rubber valve seat try to unscrew the screw holding the rubber seat if it breaks you take to hardware store and find a replacement take top with you ask for help. Re-install the opposite way Make sure when re-installing to put the packing around stem three or four turns enough for the top to compress it and able to screw back on the valve if you over tighten you won't be able to turn valve back off until you can.
its called 'an angle-stop' and if you have copper, its sweated on or compression fit. if its compression, get a crescent wrench and take it off at both pipes and take to store and replace same ones, but better quality. don't forget to shut off the water to the house outside! if its sweated on, you need to have someone that knows how to copper weld to do it for you. if its galvanized pipe, unscrew it like 1st and proceed with another like item or switch to copper with a dialectic fitting between both.
It sounds to me like they are leaking from the handle when you turn them on to use your sink? If this is the case all you need to do is shut iff the main take the screw out of the handle and remove handle. Then take off the packing nut and replace the packing material. There are only two types of packing either an O ring or rops packing. Talk to the guy at your local hardware store he can tell you what you have. You may not have to replace the actual shut off valve.
Get a shut-off valve with the same dimensions as the old one. You'll need the same sizes on both sides of the valve, one the tube end that goes in the wall and the end that goes to the pipe under the sink. If you can, shut the water off to the pipe that goes to that pipe. Take the valve off and bring it with you other wise it's all guess work. Get the compression rings. That's all you have to do is put it on. Don't over tighten the nuts and loosen the compression rings they'll drip. If you do, you can replace them by loosening them with a pliers gently and slipping them of, putting a new ring on. Should be it.
