Question:

How to keep a hairless rat warm?

I have just got hairless rat and I keep it them the quot;play roomquot; (where we keep all our spare stuff) near a radiator that is often turned on.3 days ago, one started to shiver so I took it to the local vet and she says that there is nothing wrong with it but I just need to keep it warmer.I was just wondering if hairless rats can sleep under HAND KNITTED TINY BLANKETS and I know it will probably chew it up so I want to know if its SAFE to make one to give to themAre any of you vets or know anything about this, please helpthankyou xxx

Answer:

If you knit the belt the short way instead of lengthwise, there would be less stretchEither moss stitch which is k1, p1 on one side and knitting a p stitch over a k stitch and a k stitch over a purl stitch on the following row, or double moss stitch which is k2, p2 on one row and the opposite on the next row would achieve the effect you want Crocheting your first row would be better than a long tail cast on because it would be less elastic.
One choice is to use needles that are rather small for the yarn you have in mindThis will result in tighter stitches that stretch less, althoug it also means you will have to do more total stitches to finish the workSeed stitch is not as stretchy as stockinette or garter stitchIts pattern is simple: cast on your number of stitchesEach row, k1,p1 acrossThe idea is that the stitches line up so that on one row, the knit stitches are above the purls of the previous row.
you can do linin stitch Works on an even number of stitchesRow 1: Knit 1, slip 1 with yarn in frontRepeat from across, ending with a knit 1Row 2: Purl 1, slip 1 with yarn in backRepeat from across, ending with a purl 1Repeat these two rows for patternWhen slipping stitches, always slip as if to purl another stitch that i can think of that doesnt stretch much would be moss stitchCast on an even number of sts Rows 1 and 2: (K1, P1) rep to end I would say to stay with the double cast on, it has a better cleaner edgeRows 3 and 4: (P1, K1) rep to end Repeat these 2 rows for length desiredCast off in moss st
Sorry, Mommiedearest, but a K2P2 rib is more elastic than a K1P1Knitting is elastic - that's why you use itIt is made for things that are worn close to the body so it can stretch in all directionsWoven cloth will not stretch lengthwise, and only very little widthwiseThat is the best choice for you at this timeYou can easily make a woven belt using a variety of techniques, and most of them are very inexpensive to set upLook for backstrap looms, and rigid heddle looms, and tape looms, and tablet weavingYou may investigate some macrame too, or braidingThe other thing you can use is crochet since it is not elastic at allUse a single crochet or any other stitch lengthwise and you won't get stretchThere may be some stretch across the width if you use some of the longer stitches.
No, a blanket would not be safeAnything with string-like fibers can tangle a rat, cutting of its circulation to limbs or even air supplyInstead, I would give them fleece to nest withJust cut a few 3X5 strips and put them inYour rats will know what to do! Fleece is very safe for rats; I let my pregnant and nursing females nest with it and have never had a problemThings like yarn, on the other hand, are VERY dangerousBy the way, is your vet a rodent specialist? If not, I would not trust them with any rat, and a hairless especiallyYou may want to get a second opinion.
