Question:

how to lower and raise Chevy S10 spare tire.?

I bought a used 2003 Chevy S10 pick up and it was missing the spare, rim, jack and hoist. I bought a spare, jack, tire iron and the hoist system from a junk yard. But I think there might be a piece missing. I can't see how to raise and lower the hoist? Does something get stuck into the hole under the tailgate? And if so, what is it and where do I get one?

Answer:

Mine used the same handle that the jack used. But the tool that removes the hubcaps is inserted into that hole under the tailgate and the handle is used to crank the lift up and down. Yours may be a little different.
I have a '99 S-10 Blazer, and I just use a scissor jack with a short 4x4 block of wood. never let me down once. It's lifted my entire front end.
OK... the flat end of the tire iron works to raise and lower the tire!!! Problem is, when the tire is all the way at the top, it is not secure... it just kind of hangs there and bounces around... that can't be right, can it?
S10 Spare Tire Carrier
There is a long wrench handle that fits into the hole below the tailgate which engages the hoist mechanism...the other end of it has a Z shaped handle to allow rotating the hoist mechanism to raise/lower the spare tire.. Junk yards would likely carry a used one if the stock one is missing from the truck...usually located behind the seat or under hood....some have a split handle which uses the tire iron as part of it and another handle/shaft to extend the length of it to fit through the hole to the hoist.
