Question:

How to make: Bedroom wall fabric 'decoration' with curtains and rod?

I want to make the wall behind my bed look fancy with some draped fabric using curtain rods or any suspension device. Any ideas? I have a small budget but want a classic look (the backdrop should be subtly romantic). Also, is this look outdated? Referrals, please!

Answer:

It's a lovely idea but keep in mind that effect can visually shrink a room in a hot second. If you use fabric, I would suggest a medium/dark color (to make the walls appear to recede) - solid or VERY muted pattern. Thin curtain rods would work best, I think, and they don't require any major drilling. But you also might want to consider using a suede finish paint instead (medium-to-dark color). You can still achieve a similar boudoir look by spending that money on rich-looking drapey bedding, extra pillows, and a few throws.
If you are not going to see much of the rod, then get a simple wood dowel from hardware store and paint it black so it looks like iron (or white, or whatever color goes) You can hang it from wall or ceiling using simple cup hooks (again from hardware store) . They just screw in and are cheap. Then drape the fabric over the rod. You can always add some nice ribbon or tassells to fancy it up, or if you are really wanting to be girly and romantic then maybe some fake flowers etc.
These are great ideas. The look is not outdated, and definitely opulent! Aside from making a rod and suspending it from the ceiling, you can also find a round or semi-circular canopy frame at places like Bed Bath & Beyond or Linens and Things. They most often come with a sheer fabric drape, but you could replace that with another lightweight fabric in another color and embellish as you wish. These frames are not expensive. I have also seen frames in window treatment hardware catalogs in wrought iron, but of course these are much costlier pieces. You could also use a large embroidery hoop suspended from the ceiling to create the same look!
Watch any decorating show on HGTV and you'll see it is not outdated. You could go a few different ways with this using sheets that match or compliment those you have. Sheets are already hemmed and all you'll have to do is slip the rod in. I would use a rod hung high, like to the ceiling. You can also hang the fabric on a piece of wood that you staple to the wood. Once on the wood lift fabric and nail to wall. Good luck!
