Question:

How to protect sofa from pet smells?

We have a fabric-type sofa. We have 2 dogs. One sleeps on there as much as she can!!! She's a Choc. Lab so a larger dog. She gets the sofa smelling!I plan on taking a carpet cleaner to it to get it clean. How can I protect it from smells? I was thinking of getting a plastic like material and laying it on the seat area then covering that with like a soft fabric, like what they use for pet beds. I'd remove it as guest come. How else can I protect it? What do you do?Oh and keeping dog off the sofa is a no-no. we have 2 sofas and the 'good one' is the one i bought before our marriage. My husband wants the dog to have something other then her beds to lay on so refuses to keep her off. BLOCKING sofa is NOT something we will do.We might buy a new sofa in a year or 2, but for right now I need that sofa to be CLEAN!!!!!!! Its so smelly! (Neat freak here! :) )

Answer:

Aw! Pets really are part of the family :) My cat sits next to me on the couch while I type every day. I have LOTS of fur to clean up :) Use blankets. It can still look kind of decorative and protect the sofa. As for the smell, Take an old sock, fill it with baking soda, and hide it between the couch cushions. Febreze often. Good Luck!
why are you making all this extra work for your self. IT'S A DOG ! You can still love care for it.I think dogs like sofas because they are up out of the draught, so if you put his bed where it's draughtfree then he will be happy. It will soon get used to the fact that dogs do not sleep on the sofa. Set the rule stick by it. If your man wants him to use the sofa let him clean it.

For regular cleanings, spray the couch down with vinegar. Vinegar absorbs smells and will freshen the fabric. The vinegar smell will evaporate. Before spraying, give it a vacuuming down, then spray it with the vinegar. To leave a nice pleasant smell after the vinegar has evaporated, dilute a teaspoon of vanilla extract in a bottle of water and spray over upholstery. A good way of keeping your sofa fresh is to fold a sheet to the same width as your couch cushions and place it over the cushions of your couch and tuck it in the sides. At the end of the week wash the sheet and replace it. That way most of the smell is absorbed by the sheet and not the couch. Remember, the least amount of chemicals used in your home is best for your beloved pets, they are a lot more sensitive to things you might choose to use then we are. If you are going to wash the couch (which would be good to do on a monthly basis even just with a scrub brush and then aired out) it would be good to use Washing Soda, which is a stronger form of baking soda, known to be tough on stains and even tougher on smells. Its a natural product too. You can find that in the laundry section of your local store I believe. Good luck :)
The easiest and best answer to your question is to keep you pets OFF the furniture.. The second is to keep your pet properly groomed and bathed. We have a dog and we treat her as a dog.. She is not allowed on our furniture. She has her own comfy pet bed that she lays on for hours and hours at a time. I vacuum my sofa 1x a week and use febreze on it to keep it smelling nice as I have 2 children that sit on the sofa.... If you husband wants the dogs to ruin your furniture I would suggest you get HIM a pet bed so he can lay elsewhere. You could also get a sofa slip cover that you can wash as needed or uncover when you have company.. Plastic is sooo tacky.. * Oh I read your question and it doesn't make much sense... I have a smelly dog that sleeps on the couch but, I don't want my couch to smell? Doesn't make much sense.... If you groom/bathe your dog they don't smell.... Good luck
