how to remove rear axle from 2001 chevy tahoe?

Answer:

Start by draining and removing the rear differential cover. This is done by unbolting the 10 bolts that attach the cover to the diff. They are 13mm hex heads and one holds a bracket for the rear brake line. Once the cover is removed, the pumpkin or differential is visible, on the right/passenger side of the differential is a jam bolt that holds the center pin in place. It should be a 5/16 bolt. Use caution when removing this bolt, I have seen them break. Once the jam bolt is out the center pin should slide out. Important.do not spin the axle or the differential while this pin is removed, otherwise the spider gears will fall out. Gently push the axle inward and remove the C-clip. Once the C-clip is removed the axle will slide right out. Installation is the opposite of removal, except to refill the fluid requires that the fill plug be removed. It is located on the right/passenger side of the differential, but on the front side of the axle housing. Hope this helps. Christopher
