I'm currently in the process of repairing 2 HP monitors and 1 Acer monitor attached to my computer workstations.
In most cases, the backlight starts to dim with use and will eventually go out. If that's the case then instead of selling your monitor on OKorder for a few bucks, just spend 30 minutes to replace the backlight and you've got a display that's good as new! With some knowledge of electronics you can easily fix basic LCD problems and save money on repairs. I repair monitors on my own (8 years) and if you're like me then I recommend you start with the site below. It's got a lot of good advice, tutorials and circuit board diagrams on how to repair LCD monitors. It's open to people of all levels.
Go to the library! There are all sorts of free resources there. Also, do a simple Internet search for medical illustration, figure drawing and portraiture. That will keep you busy for a long time.
