Question:

how to troubleshoot car alarm malfunction?

I have a remote starter installed in my car (Nissan Sentra) with a key fob that is connected to the OEM theft alarm. Recently it has been malfunctioning- when i try to unlock the doors with the remote, the alarm sounds. The only way to kill the alarm is to stick the key in the passenger side door. What could be causing this malfunction? I‘ve had the remote starter for years so I really don‘t think that‘s the problem- it‘s the alarm itself.

Answer:

If this started at the same time as the remote starter install, I'd take it back to wherever installed it and tell them it's screwed up. If not, then the first thing I'd do is check the battery in the fob. It may be weak, and only get out a partial signal that causes the alarm to sound. If that's not it, I'd look for websites for the remote starter and/or alarm, and see if they have any tech support or forums.
