Question:

how wide can i go with a rear motorcycle tire?

i have a 2005 honda spirit and i want to go with a wider tire without any mods.what is the widest tire i can put on the factory rim.thanks

Answer:

You don't really get any wider by going with a larger size. The rim pinches the tire down and leaves it in a slightly triangular shape. That can make a motorcycle handle really strangely. The exra rotational mass will even make your bike slightly slower. Plus, after you look at it for about 2 days it isn't going to look any different from stock even if it is slightly wider.
Don't bother the bike will handle better on the original size tyres.
The 750 came with a 160. The 1100 came with a 170. Up one is my personal rule, for many reasons. Partly because that's all that will fit (have cut chainguards for clearance). Partly because I've found that the manufacturers do actually spec well, and the narrow tires work well.
