Question:

How would one solve this problem involving efficiency and compound machines?

I had this question on one of my Physics exams and I am curious on how to solve it correctly:quot;A motor having an efficiency of 88% operates a crane having an efficiency of 42%With what constant speed does the crane lift a 410-kg crate of machine parts if the power supplied to the motor is 5.5 kW?quot;I can solve these types of problems if there is only one machine involved, but I am not too sure how to incorporate both the motor and the craneWhat I did on the test was multiply these two efficiencies together (0.88 x 0.42 0.3696 37%) and then worked it like a one-machine problem, but I wasn't taking the correct path (I knew I wasn't, but I just wanted to take a nice shot in the dark)How is this problem solved?

Answer:

Yes if you put insulation up in the floor joist and also wrap you furnace ducts with insulation you'll be saving engeryi did both of these and basement use to stay hot, but it's just cool nowThere is a special insulation for duct work.
If you ADD insulation in tghe area you are consiideering you will make the floors colderHeat Rises and insulation will keep the heat that radiats from the duct from risingSome people actually add a duct in the basemenet so the heat helps the basement and floorsInsulate the attic and walls.
I have just moved cities and realize that I must go again to the Home Depot or Rona and get insulating plastic sheets (the kind that go up with 2 sided tape and shrink fit with a hair dryer) for all the windows hereSaves an immense amount of heating energyThe $50 it will cost to do all the windows will pay itself off in a month or twoThe furnace is also on a programmed thermostat.
You were, in fact, correct, if my rusty conceptual knowledge of high school physics isn't failing meSee [1] and [2].
You need to do the attic first but doing the floor in that situation is not going to be a big money saver but it will make an impact on your comfort.
