Question:

Hw do i control the speed of an AC motor?

i have an old 1kw vacuum motor that i want to power a bike with, i think its AC but im not entirely sure. how do i control the speed of motor so i can accelerate slowly? iv heard light dimmer switches only work on DC motors?thanks for your help :)

Answer:

A familiar motor is largely a DC motor, and additionally will run on AC. maximum washer autos have a velocity comments, to the fee administration PCB, to regulate speeds for wash, sluggish and rapid spins. This generally incorporates an basic DC generator, comprising everlasting magnet and coil, on the tip of motor rigidity shaft. in case you have controlled to get motor turning with a variac, then can assume motor is okay and subject is probably with feed back geny or administration board. despite if, you may examine that the brushes are unfastened in packing containers and long adequate. (spring rigidity).
Light dimmer works on AC, but its limit is not more than 600W and it could not control AC motor smoothly. Vacuum motor runs on 120V ac power. How could you carry this type of power supply in your bike to power this motor ? To control its speed, either using a 1000 watt variable transformer which is very big and heavy,or an expensive variable frequency power source rated 1000W.
Use a fuse in series with whatever you apply so that the motor is safe. If it is acdc, then applying a dc will also get it going. You can convert an ac of 12V to pulsating dc if you use a bridge rectifier rated for say 200V and 10 amps. if vacuum motor is rated for less than 1.2kW. If it is not an ac dc motor, most likely the fuse (say 15 amps) will save it. Get somebody who knows all this, just to make sure you do not have to buy a new vacuum motor..
