Question:

Carpet tile...?

I am trying to find a practical solution to carpeting my basement with pets and kids in the house. I was looking at carpet tile because I can just replace a worn or stained piece. Has anyone here used carpet tile? What brand did you buy and how did it hold up? Can this be easily installed or do I need a pro? Any tips?

Answer:

Yes carpet tiles are wonderful if you have children and pets. My brother has 4 children a dog and a cat and we put carpet tile in his basement and it seems wonderful he bought an extra box just to save for accidents and if somebody spilled something or something happened to the carpet. We just pull one up put another one in and it's great i highly suggest carpet tiles with a bunch of children and pets.
i use it also. i got mine from sears , it is the self stick. works great. i would buy xtra amt.
Unless your pets are WELL behaved They will make short work of ripping tiles up and chewing the edges to frazzles. Leaving turned up edges and holes your kids can trip on. If they are unruly, even a one piece carpet is up for grabs. Esp in the corners and at the door, if they want in or out. This applies whether it is Glued down Or stretched in. Good Luck with it! RT
Yes, we had a couple small areas that needed carpet so we used that. Ours had rubber backs so we didn't even glue it down. Now they say you have to do some fancy measuring and start in the middle of the floor. I have yet to find a square floor in any house or basement so....that's a bit silly. The reason they tell you to do that tho, is so you can make cuts at the walls instead of the middle. When you buy them there will be instructions and the seller will help. Sorry square means basically this. Measure 2 ft on a corner wall and 3 ft on the adjoining wall, between the two marks measure and it should be 5 ft. (this will be a triangle) My basement was off 2 1/2 inches. This just means you'll have some funky cuts at the end so put them where they won't be seen.
i have used carpet tile for what i wanted it was perfect!! VERY VERY EASY to install (much easier than peel press tile) easy to trim- we used it because i wanted an ultra low nap carpet in the baby's room (she had severe dust allergies) the rest of the house we removed all the carpet down to the cement floor. the only 'issue' i have had is that with constant picking at it a tile can be pulled up (small bored child LOL!) but if you keep any extras its easily replaced) we had no dogs at the time so cannot speak to that if i had it to do over.... i wouldnt have bothered. we LOVE the cement floor. once she out grew the crawling stage the only carpets we use now are throw rugs that are easily cleaned i would never go back to having any carpet by choice. the plain flooring can be polished/ stained or left as is- its especially nice in the looooong summer weather we have here. in the winter the throw rugs warm it up. if you truly dont like the cement - consider the new floating wood floors like pergo- you might be happier in the long run- remember that if you are prone to any kind of flooding in your basement carpet holds mold (yecch!) rj
